Laser firing unit
Product description
IDIL introduces an innovative generation of systems and components for opto-pyrotechnics. These solutions use precisely controlled laser pulses, transmitted through optical fibers, to activate opto-pyro initiators (IOPs) or detonators (DOPs) in applications such as launchers and thrusters. A complete and safe opto-pyro system includes a Laser Firing Unit (LFU) emitting a NIR light pulse travelling through a ground Optical Harness (OH) to reach its designated point. Multiple stage Safety Barriers (SB) ensure the entire opto-pyro channel integrity.
- Multi-channels (modular slots)
- System programming & Remote control (Ethernet RJ45 socket)
- Calibration mode access (expert user)
- Multiple Safety Barriers (Laser interlock, laser safety key on each channel, harness presence detection, innovative optical switch…)
- System integrity check required before activation
- Remote-only activation and pulse delivery
- No electronics, no electrical wires inside harnesses

QUESTIONS
The Laser Firing Unit (LFU) incorporates a multiple stage safety barrier to prevent accidental activation and ensure secure operation:
- Military-grade optical connectors with robust 2.5 mm ceramic ferrules and electrical contact verification confirm proper physical connection. These connectors—standard in aerospace and defense programs—feature integrated seals and a bayonet locking mechanism for enhanced reliability.
- Remote control monitoring, combined with a mandatory successful test, ensures the firing sequence can only be initiated under controlled conditions.
- Additionally, the Optical Safety Barrier (OSB) ensures that no light exits the LFU unless the optical switch is in a confirmed safe position, further protecting both users and equipment.
Our LFU has 3 operating modes:
- Stand-by mode: adjust your lasers parameters (duration, power). Wait for command from remote controller.
- Test mode: check the integrity of the opto-pyro line with a low power laser at a safe wavelength.
- Firing mode: once the system passes the integrity test, deliver the optical pulse. After completion, the system returns to stand-by mode for safety.
- Calibration mode (expert user): a personal password is required to access the calibration mode and prepare the activation sequence. Most of the safety barriers are unlocked, except the mechanical ones: interlock, keys, harness presence, OSB. An activation command can be sent without prior line test.
- Software remote control mde (standard user): laser duration and power can be remotely configured in a secure manner. Each of the 3 modes can then be sequentially activated until the final activation command.
